The Story of The Bird

Since it's the weekend and hopefully that means you have a little more time to hang out and relax, I thought you might like to hear a story.

Back on Sunday, December 26, Ryan invited me to share along with him in both Sunday morning services.

Notice I said "share", not preach.  I am a good Baptist pastor's wife.

Together, we told the story of Lily, from the beginning.

Many members of our congregation feel that Lily Bird belongs to them as much as she does to us.  And we are so thankful that she is constantly loved and prayed for by those same sweet people.

Every Sunday, we are asked about Lily and how she's doing.

It's difficult to know how much to share, especially when we know there are many, many people around us who are struggling and in the midst of their own heartbreak.

But our baby girl has taught us countless lessons, both individually and as a family.

So while much of this story is about fear, uncertainty, and doubt, it ends in faith, trust, and ultimately, victory.

Take some time this weekend to listen.

I pray that while you learn more about my family, you might learn something about yourself and how you, too, can live in faith, trust, and victory.... one day at a time.

Click on the link below to have a listen.  See you Monday.

  1. I'm glad you posted this. I hated to miss this particular Sunday because I knew y'all were going to tell Lily's story and we were going to be out of town. I really enjoy the blog and all of the Lily stories. :)

  6. Lana, I don't think you know me... my husband and I have been members of BBC for almost 3 yrs. We went through our own faith breakthrough last year when we lost our 2nd little girl when I was five months pregnant with her. Ryan preached her funeral. Anyway, I've almost stopped you in Target before to tell you that it means so much to us to have a pastor and his wife who understand what tragedy feels like. I just had a chance to listen to the sermon from the 26th and it was a blessing to hear your honesty and openness! God bless you for being willing to be real and genuine!

  7. I remember Ryan doing your sweet girl's funeral but I don't believe we've met. You are one brave lady and my heart goes out to you.

I read your post "I'm not OK but thanks for asking" just a minute ago and while I have not lost a child, I know that you and I both will never again take for granted what a blessing life is.

I must be honest and tell you that my first thought when you said you'd seen me in Target was, "oh no... I wonder if I was wearing a ball cap and no make-up! I really hope I was dressed."

But no matter how I look, next time you see me, come say hi, ok? :)

And keep reading to your precious daughter - it's a good thing!

  8. :) We peruse Target a lot since we live within walking distance and you look great either way. If I see you there again I'll say hello.

Nick (my husband) said he sat behind you and Ryan recently on a flight. We're everywhere! Haha

  9. Living within walking distance of Target?!? Ryan would make me move!

And I remember Ryan saying Nick was on our flight but I missed seeing him walk by us - oops!

  10. Lana,

As you may know, Allison and I have a 10 year old daughter named Lily who has autism, and her condition is rather severe. She is completely non-verbal, she is probably MR as well, and she has her share of behavior issues, and will require assistance for the rest of her life. I could write a book on the lessons God has taught us over the last 7 to 8 years. But it boils down to this; He is so faithful, His grace is completely sufficient, and He provides a hope that shines even in our darkest hours. Short of a true miracle, our Lily will never speak a word on this sod, but I have an assurance of things hoped for, and a conviction of things not seen, and one day, In God's presence I shall hear our Lily sing praises to our Lord and King, and she will tell me she loves me. Thank you for sharing your testimony, and know that you, Lily, Ryan and your entire family are in my prayers.

P.S. How do you have time to write a blog?

  11. Ben - it's so good to hear from you! I keep up with you periodically through our moms so I was familiar with your sweet Lily. Your comment said it all! And all I can say is, "Amen"! I often wonder how people in our situation get through it all without the hope of Christ. Ryan and I will pray for you, Allison, and Lily as well - hug your girls and hold them tight!

FYI - I do most of my blogging while Lily's at school but I'll tell you a little secret. It's actually quite addictive and incredibly therapeutic for me. I hate to miss a day!
