Since I'm always interested to see how people are incorporating assistive communication devices into their daily lives, I thought you might like to take a peek at one of the ways Lily is using hers at school.
This video shows her following along with the story Brown Bear, Brown Bear, What Do You See? and if you listen closely, you can hear when she selects a button on the device.
As you can see, the therapist is doing some of the scrolling for Lily so that she stays on the correct category. If left completely on her own, Lily would probably opt to finish up story time a little early, change to a different category, choosing unlimited snacks and outside playtime.
While I'm happy to see the Bird using Proloquo and her Touch and getting more comfortable with it, I still long for the day I hear her own sweet voice say what animals she sees rather than pressing a button. Come on words!!
If any of you have a video of your kiddo using an assistive communication device, I'd love to see it. I get so many good ideas from all of you and would love to see what you're doing. Feel free to share - maybe by leaving a link on a comment below?
Have a great day!
I found myself thinking, "Come on, say the word, Lily." as I watched the video.
ReplyDeleteHer ability to communicate even non-verbally has come so far just since I've known her, I just KNOW it's a matter of time before the words come out!!!... praying AUDACIOUS PRAYERS for this to happen my friend!!!!
You and me both! :) Thanks for the prayers...
DeleteSo glad I found you....and Miss Lily! My son is 18, has a rare genetic disorder with a lengthy list of complications including cognitive and speech delay. We just purchased PLQ2GO for Sam, and could not be happier. I am still learning my way around it after years with a Dynavox device. Is the Brown Bear read-along in PLQ2GO somewhere, or is that an additional app? Thanks for sharing, I look forward to hearing more about your beautiful family!
ReplyDeleteHi Deborah - Thanks for the comment! Basically, all I did with Brown Bear was search Google images for actual pages from the book and downloaded them onto her Touch, putting all the pictures under a "Books" category on PLQ2Go. The computerized voice just says the animal names, doesn't read the story. I have a hard copy of the book that I read out loud and Lily matches the animals on her Touch. So it's not really the actual book on her device - just the pictures. Make sense?
DeleteI do think there might be a Brown Bear e-book if you have a Kindle or the Kindle app...
Thanks for the info, I think I can figure this one out! Have you found Pictello? It is a great app which allows me to create photo albums of events in Sam's life. He can then initiate 'conversations' and, or share what he's been up to. Well worth the purchase. Have a great weekend!
DeleteI'm praying with no doubts for you will hear her speak very soon. May God continue blessing you both!
ReplyDeleteThanks so much!
DeleteTo me? Lily is bored with this. She's got it down, mama!! So looks like she needs something more challenging to me. Is this an ABA session with someone else participating? Because I thought Lily gets home-schooled... The pace of the therapist is really quite fast. Tootles takes a minute to respond to process the language and all so her quick responses say she needs some new material to me as a casual observer! (She is a dolly!)
ReplyDeleteI think you're right, Karen. She is bored... Right now, Lily is at an ABA clinic Monday - Friday 8:30-4, with speech and OT. So no homeschool for us yet. But we are struggling a little with what to do. We feel like she needs some change but are not sure which direction to proceed yet....
DeleteShe did awesome with that! I agree with Karen, that therapist was REALLY fast, and Lily totally kept up! Good for her! I hope you get to hear her speak soon!
ReplyDeleteThanks, Jen! I think she's ready for something new. What that is, I'm not sure yet...
DeleteThanks for sharing!
ReplyDeleteMy son (9) changed from PECS to PLQ2GO this past fall. He is doing amazing at school. For abilities week they programmed a 5 step "talk" about Helen Keller that Luke "spoke" over the PA system on one morning! The kids in my daughter's 5th grade class were even impressed. It is really time for him to bring the iPad home and to daycare. Right now he is doing way too much hitting and too many meltdowns. Once I get that figured out I will feel safer with it here.
